1️⃣Will Google’s AMIE replace doctors?
Navigating health care systems as a patient or a caregiver can be daunting at the best of times, whether you’re interpreting jargon-filled diagnoses or determining which specialists to see next. You cannot always blame the medical professionals here as doctors often have grueling schedules that make it difficult to offer personalized attention to all their patients. 🩺
These issues are only exacerbated in areas with limited physicians and medical infrastructure. So, bringing technology and AI into the doctor’s office to solve real-world problems like these is a long-held vision of mine for which we are actively working in my product development studio, Siam Computing.🚀
While we are tackling these problems at our end, the team behind Google DeepMind has proposed a new AI healthcare model called AMIE (Articulate Medical Intelligence Explorer), in a recent preprint paper published on 11 January on arXiv.
🛠️AMIE under the hood
AMIE could take in information from patients and provide clear explanations of medical conditions in a wellness visit consultation. But Google didn't just toss a bunch of data at AMIE to achieve this. They meticulously trained it on real-world datasets, including medical reasoning and clinical conversations. 🧠
Here's the kicker - they went above and beyond by creating a simulated diagnostic dialogue environment. This wasn't just about teaching AMIE to regurgitate medical facts; it was about imbuing it with the essence of good clinical dialogue - empathy, relationship-building, and effective communication.
🌟The result of AMIE’s brilliance
The chatbot's performance was assessed through consultations with simulated patients, played by trained actors, and compared to those conducted by 20 board-certified primary care physicians (PCPs). In this showdown, AMIE flexed its digital muscles across critical aspects of consultation quality, including history-taking, diagnostic accuracy, communication skills, and empathy, and AMIE held its own.
In fact, in certain cases, it outshone the human counterparts in diagnostic accuracy and performance in various pointers!
Takeaways for Healthcare Leaders
To hospital owners, decision-makers, and product leaders in healthcare - AMIE is a signal that the future of healthcare is evolving. So, It's time to:
🤝Explore AI Collaborations: Consider building AI systems like AMIE into your healthcare infrastructure and apps to enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of patient interactions. It’s not as hard as you think. Reach out to me and I’ll help you with the best way forward.
🏥Prioritize Patient Experience: The success of AMIE is not just in its diagnostics but in its ability to create positive patient experiences. Prioritize technologies that elevate the overall patient journey.
💬Embrace Conversational Excellence: The success of AMIE lies in its ability to emulate nuanced clinical dialogue. For healthcare product leaders, this means prioritizing not just information but the art of conversation in your healthcare AI products.
👩⚕️Upskill Your Teams: As AI becomes a collaborative partner, ensure your healthcare teams are adept at working alongside these digital counterparts.
🌈Beyond Information, Prioritize Empathy: AMIE's success extends beyond accurate diagnoses. It incorporates empathy and relationship-building. Healthcare products should not just be knowledgeable; they should be compassionate, mirroring the human touch.

2️⃣Video: From Artificial Intelligence to Hybrid Intelligence
With the ultra focus on artificial intelligence systems which are looking to grant complete autonomy to machine decisions, we are forgetting other fundamental intelligence principles such as hybrid intelligence.
Hybrid Intelligence (HI) is the combination of human intelligence with artificial intelligence, enabling humans and AI to mutually grow together.
In this video, Catholijn Jonker, professor of Interactive Intelligence at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Mathematics, and Computer Science of the Delft University of Technology, touches upon the topic of hybrid intelligence.
Jonker reflects on the ethical concerns with AI, particularly regarding predictive maintenance and the potential loss of human expertise and unintended consequences. To tackle these challenges, she champions the advancement of hybrid intelligence systems, which blend AI and human intelligence to better understand complex real-world situations and adhere to human values.
3️⃣Podcast: Heard of Large Action Models?
The breakout star from the Consumer Electronics Conference 2024 is Rabbit’s pocket-sized AI gadget - R1. While most companies are focused on utilizing large language models (LLMs), Rabbit's core expertise lies in its unique approach to AI hardware by collecting real human interactions with software for large action models (LAMs).
In this podcast, Rabbit’s founder and CEO Jesse Lyu talks about the differences between large language models and large action models, the data collection process for training LAM, the role of Teenage Engineering in product design (the people behind the Nothing phone), and more.
4️⃣AI Product Adoption is Faster
AI products are on pace to be adopted faster than products built during the internet and smartphone technology waves, according to data from Writerbuddy and Coatue, visualized by visualcapitalist.com
The website notes that “Despite still being in the early stages of its adoption, artificial intelligence has already produced tools that have garnered billions of visits and thousands of paying users for premium versions of AI products.”
The data was visualized as part of their 2024 Global Forecast Series ranking the most popular AI tools of 2023. Not surprisingly, OpenAI’s ChatGPT emerged as the most popular AI tool of 2023 racking up 14.6 billion visits to their website, followed by Character.AI (3.8 billion visits) and QuillBot (1.1B).
